NORTH AND EAST IN FOR ANOTHER BURST OF RAIN

May 31, 2010

MetService has issued a Severe Weather Warning for heavy rain on Tuesday covering the Coromandel Peninsula, Bay of Plenty and northern Gisborne regions.  In addition, a Severe Weather Watch has also been issued to ensure that people in the northern and central parts of the North Island, Hawke’s Bay, Nelson, Marlborough, the Kaikoura Coast and north Canterbury are alert to the possibility, on Tuesday, of a burst of heavy rain.

“This rain is associated with a low pressure system that is expected to move onto central New Zealand on Wednesday,” commented MetService Weather Ambassador, Bob McDavitt.  “With the rain, we expect a period of strong northeast winds.  This is why we have targeted the heaviest rain for the hills of Coromandel, Bay of Plenty,  and northern Gisborne.”

McDavitt added that the rain band is likely to move smartly, which reduces the chance of very large rainfall totals.  “However, where the rain falls on already sodden ground, it may not take much for local rivers and streams to rise rapidly.  People in places more susceptible to surface flooding should pay careful attention.”
