SOGGY SOUTHERLIES

June 25, 2010

MetService has issued a Severe Weather Warning for heavy rain over northern and eastern areas from Auckland to Marlborough on Friday and Saturday. There is also a Severe Weather Watch, for the possibility of heavy rain and severe gale southerlies during Saturday, in the west from Taranaki to Wellington, and in the neighbouring areas of Taihape and Marlborough.

“A large low over northern New Zealand is expected to track southwards on Saturday and deepen east of Wairarapa”, commented MetService Weather Ambassador, Bob McDavitt.  “This will shift the rain and wind more towards the south and west of the North Island.”

Southerly winds through Cook Strait are likely to peak on Saturday night and may reach severe gale force in exposed places about the Kaikoura Coast, outer Marlborough Sounds, and Wellington.

The combination of rain and strong winds will make driving conditions challenging, and people travelling in these areas are urged to keep up to date with the latest weather information.  Updates are always available on metservice.com and, for mobiles, on m.metservice.com.
