MetService has issued a Severe Weather Watch for heavy rain and snow over the next few days.

“Winter isn’t over yet,” said MetService Weather Ambassador, Bob McDavitt. “A large low is expected to cross central New Zealand during the weekend, bringing rain or snow to much of the country.”

According to McDavitt the main impact of this system is likely to be from late Saturday through Sunday, over the south and east of the South Island. “In areas from Southland through to Marlborough we’re expecting snow on Sunday down to about 300 metres and cold rain below that. It’s not yet clear how much snow will fall, but this could turn out to be a significant snow event for Canterbury and Marlborough.”

“This wintry outbreak is likely to produce challenging travelling conditions and affect vulnerable livestock. Keep up to date with the latest MetService Warnings, Watches and Outlooks for severe weather in the media, at, or on mobile at”
