EARLY NOTICE OF HEAVY RAIN AND POSSIBLE GALES

May 23, 2011

MetService expects that a frontal rain band will makes its presence felt as it moves from the Tasman Sea on to New Zealand during Tuesday and Wednesday.

“We have issued a Severe Weather Warning for heavy rain in Fiordland and Westland, and a Watch for Buller, Nelson, Marlborough, with possible spill-over into the Canterbury and Otago headwaters,” said MetService Weather Ambassador, Bob McDavitt.

McDavitt added that, on Wednesday and Thursday, this front may become slow-moving over the North Island, with a low-pressure system forming on it and affecting central parts of the country. “If this happens, severe northerly gales may cover the area from Taranaki to Cook Strait, and heavy rain may reach western and northern districts.”

“There’s still reasonable uncertainty about how the weather situation will play out on Wednesday and Thursday.  This is an early ‘heads up’ for anyone planning outdoor activities over that time to take the weather into account, and check our website at metservice.com for updated forecasts and warnings. These are also available for mobile browsers at m.metservice.com.”
