MetService has issued a Severe Weather Warning for heavy rain in Fiordland and over Stewart Island. A Severe Weather Watch, again for rain, is in force for parts of the Bay of Plenty, Gisborne, Taranaki, Nelson and Marlborough districts.

“A low over the Tasman Sea is directing subtropical air on to New Zealand,” commented MetService Weather Ambassador, Bob McDavitt. “During Tuesday, rain should spread to most places.”

McDavitt added that, in the Bay of Plenty, “recovery operations on the stricken ship Rena may become challenging for a time on Tuesday, with northeast winds rising to gale or near gale and waves increasing in size.”

On Thursday, after the low moves away from the New Zealand area, a cooler westerly flow is expected to cover the country.
