The weather is expected to be unsettled over the North Island this week, as a warm rain-bearing air mass spreads down from the Tropics. “Eastern areas of the North Island are likely to have rain for much of the week, with at least one heavy rainfall episode between now and Good Friday,” commented Media and Communications Meteorologist Daniel Corbett. “Additionally, parts of the North Island should be quite windy at some point between Tuesday and Thursday, with winds of at least gale force possible.”

In strong contrast, the weather over much of the South Island this week is expected to be fine with generally not much wind. The exceptions are the Kaikoura Coast and possibly north Canterbury, which are likely to catch some of the easterly rain and wind later in the week.

Corbett went on to say, “Getting the finer detail of the heavy rain and wind correct in this situation is proving challenging. As is the case with many tropical features as they move into the mid-latitudes, predicting its track is difficult. It will be important to keep up to date with the latest MetService forecasts and warnings, as the weather picture evolves over the course of the week.”
