End of the golden weather, briefly

January 31, 2013

The large anticyclone that has sat in place over much of New Zealand for the past week will be moving east this weekend, returning cloud and rain or showers to many parts early next week.

MetService Media and Communications Meteorologist Daniel Corbett commented” The big high that was stuck , or blocked, in place just to the east of New Zealand is now weakening, and this will allow a brief spell of rain to move through Sunday and early next week.”

The incoming weather system will bring rain or showers across most parts of New Zealand. It could be heavy for a time across some western provinces,

Unfortunately, the rain accompanying the southerly change will be far more limited, and not nearly enough for the very dry regions in the east and north of the North Island.

This front and southerly change will be replaced by a new high from about the middle of the week, bringing further settled weather.

Morning and evening cloud will chaperone those attending the Hertz NZ Sevens tournament in Wellington, with northerlies slowly becoming more boisterous. Temperatures will reach the mid-twenties, dipping to the high teens during the evenings.
