MetService establishes Auckland-based forecast team

April 11, 2013

MetService has commenced locally-based forecast operations in Auckland to further support New Zealand’s biggest city.

MetService Manager Public Weather Services Ramon Oosterkamp says, “This move realises the benefits of having additional meteorological expertise focused on this region, and signals a real strengthening of ties with local authorities there.”

“In evolving our relationship with Auckland Council, it was important to be able to provide on-the-spot meteorological expertise to assist their targeted response planning,” says Oosterkamp.

Spearheading the new team is Georgina Griffiths, a senior meteorologist with recognised expertise who returns to her roots having trained with MetService. As well as local forecasting and consultancy duties, Ms Griffiths will work closely with communications meteorologists Daniel Corbett and John Law to provide Auckland-based media with additional, locally-focused comment and information.

MetService General Manager Communications Jacqui Bridges says, “Georgina’s appointment fits perfectly with our strategy of hiring only highly-qualified meteorologists with a real interest in weather, and ability in communication, to be our spokespeople. She will help build further on the great media and public communications work Dan Corbett is leading for us, ensuring the public know the very best weather information comes from MetService.”

The Auckland-based team will integrate fully with MetService’s national forecasting operations in Wellington.
