A mostly fine weekend but more wind and rain next week

May 1, 2014

Over this weekend, the weather is expected to be reasonably settled in between active weather systems on either side of the country. MetService Media and Communications Meteorologist Daniel Corbett commented, “The active low from earlier this week is now well east of the country, and in its place we have a slim ridge that will do just enough to keep the weather mostly fine for the weekend before the next rainmaker rolls in early next week.”

The start of the weekend may still feature some damp weather at first with a dying front bringing extra cloud and a few spots of rain from parts of Taranaki down to Wellington. There could also be a few showers across Fiordland and parts of Southland. Elsewhere, it should be mostly fine and dry.

Sunday is still likely to be mainly dry over the North Island but the next active front will start to bring wet and windy weather to the west coast of the South Island. This wet weather will then spread across the remainder of the country during Monday, with the risk of heavy falls for some western coasts.
