Warm for some and wet for others

May 19, 2014

The weekend was a reminder of summer for many, with plenty of clear blue sky and sunshine, albeit with a distinctly autumnal chill in the air first thing. This week starts with the remains of the weekend’s high pressure still firmly in place. But as active systems move northwards across New Zealand this week, there is some wet and windy weather on the way.

“It’s a great start to the week across the North Island” John Law, MetService meteorologist said. “For many spots Monday and Tuesday will be dry with plenty of sunshine. The cloudiest places are likely to be on the West Coast with some rain as well.” The forecast for the week contains more rain for the west of the South Island in the coming days with Severe Weather Warnings in force for Fiordland and the ranges of southern Westland.

Wet weather is set to move up the South Island and onto the North Island during Wednesday. It isn’t all bad news, as ahead of the rain, there will be some warmer temperatures in the east. “The return of the northwest winds will be a real boost to the temperatures for the middle of the week down the eastern side of the country” added Law.

Later in the week, another front approaches the country, with further heavy rain expected for the West Coast and severe northwest gales possible in eastern areas from Wairarapa to Otago.
