Rain for many but heading to a cold finish

August 18, 2014

After a fine weekend and a frosty start to the week, a low from the Tasman Sea is set to bring a decent amount of rain and warmer northerly winds across much of the North Island and upper South Island late Tuesday and through Wednesday. “MetService has issued a Severe Weather Watch from Northland down to Bay of Plenty and Rotorua, and including Auckland, where short-duration rainfall may reach warning amounts of 70 mm in 12 hours from late Tuesday to early Wednesday,” commented MetService meteorologist Rob Kerr.

Meanwhile, further south, conditions are far more benign at the start of the week. “Frosts are likely again Tuesday and Wednesday mornings, with overnight minimums similar to the -2C we saw around much of the South Island this morning, and even down to -4C seen at Pukaki,” added Mr Kerr. “However, it is set to get even colder as a cold front sweeps across the South Island late Wednesday and over the eastern North Island on Thursday. This should bring a brief spell of snow as low as 600m along the eastern side of the Southern Alps on Wednesday, and to 1000m over the North Island’s Central Plateau Thursday morning, affecting Mt Ruapehu and possibly the Desert Road,” said Kerr.
