Changeable spring weather continues

October 30, 2014

Wednesday was a very active and thundery day for the upper parts of the North Island, with lots of heavy and squally showers affecting Northland and Auckland. “The good news is that there will be a brief break”, MetService Meteorologist Elke Louw said. “However, another front is on its way for the South Island, with rain expected to set in again along the West Coast, with some heavy falls developing during Thursday evening”.

As this front moves onto the North Island on Friday, it should be much weaker with showers, chiefly in the west and some windy spots in eastern places. In the meantime, the South Island can expect a brief break with settled weather.

“The spring weather is expected to continue as we head into the weekend”, Louw said. More rain is expected with strong to gale northwesterlies first arriving in the south, then moving north. These will potentially reach severe gale in exposed places east of the Southern Alps on Saturday. The wind precedes the next frontal system, which brings heavy rain from Fiordland to Buller by Sunday.

“The front is expected to weaken as it heads towards the North Island at the beginning of next week, although a period of heavy rain is likely for the Tararua Range” Louw said.
