High pressure puts paid to wet weather

June 30, 2016

It was very wet across the North Island yesterday as a low pressure system spread fronts across the island. Parts of Auckland experienced downpours yesterday afternoon, with 20-30mm falling in one hour.

“However, the end of the week is looking much better, as a ridge of high pressure spreads onto the country tomorrow and remains with us through the weekend,” explained MetService Meteorologist Ciaran Doolin.

The low is forecast to move southeast of the North Island today. However, showers are expected to continue over the central and northern North Island, and rain over the southeast of the island. A Severe Weather Watch for heavy rain is in force for Hawke’s Bay until this evening. A weak front moves up the South Island today bringing a few showers to eastern areas, while the West Coast and Central Otago will be mostly sunny.

Tomorrow, it should be a sunny day for many across the country, with some frosty starts inland. Occasional showers can be expected about eastern areas of the North Island which will gradually clear throughout the day. Saturday is looking even better, with fine weather expected for most of the country.
