The windy spring weather is set to continue this week, with several fronts bringing bouts of rain to western areas, and warm temperatures with blustery northwest winds in the east.
An active front is expected to move onto the South Island late on Tuesday, bringing with it rain once again, for the likes of Fiordland and Westland. “A severe weather warning has been issued for periods of heavy rain for those regions on Tuesday,” said MetService Meteorologist Elke Louw. “Ahead of this front we are expecting strengthening northwest winds with severe gales possible in exposed places over inland Canterbury and Otago; also Marlborough, Wellington and Wairarapa, where a watch is currently in place. ” This front is expected to weaken as it makes its way onto the North Island on Wednesday and Thursday.
It has been a humid couple of days in many parts of the North Island, but a change to colder southwesterlies is expected towards the end of the week. “You might just want to keep that warm jumper handy,” Louw commented. Maximum temperatures are expected to dip back down into the lower to mid-teens on Friday for the South Island, with the cold southwesterlies reaching the North Island later the same day.
